Review: KPop Demon Hunters are everywhere these days - even in your breakfast cereal! The Saja Boys have taken over Cinnamon Toast Crunch (stay tuned for that), and Huntrix has transformed Lucky Charms into an intriguing peach mango treat. It's got to be one of the more creative flavors of Lucky Charms I've tried.

I feel like the marshmallows are either faded, or they picked out the contrasting colors, because it contributes to a somewhat paler, almost pastel visual presentation, that matches the pinkish purple box. There's an unmistakable hint of peach mango flavor, but after a bite or two, it tends to get lost in the oats - which is the same problem I had with Cotton Candy Lucky Charms. The flavor is there, it's just not vivid enough.

I like these new flavors Lucky Charms has been coming up with (and the KPop Demon Hunters branding is a lot of fun) - they're a lot more creative than just adding a new marshmallow we'll never see again. But I've yet to find one that I absolutely love.

Cotton Candy Lucky Charms

Review: Every new year, the cereal manufacturers release a bunch of new flavors all at once. It's usually the biggest cereal haul of the year. This year, it took me until Easter to review them all. Then I had a short break; but it wasn't long before the summer flavors hit the shelves. I had just finished a box of Lucky Charms with JUMBO Rainbows over the break, so I wasn't too keen on getting another one - just with JUMBO Unicorns this time - so soon. But then I saw this cereal. How could I pass it up?

Cotton candy is a pretty creative flavor for cereal. (Although what is the flavor of cotton candy, besides just "sugar"?). I love the concept and presentation of this cereal, which is a good thematic match for this brand. And I like that they incorporated unicorns into the theme - with three new marshmallows! (Although they just recolored their manes).

Upon opening the box, you get an unmistakable whiff of cotton candy. But the appearance of this cereal leaves something to be desired. Traditionally, cotton candy comes in pink and blue (which are the colors that most remind me of Pride - being that it's June - since I lean more toward the trans end of the rainbow). How delightful would that have been? But instead we get a speckled purple that's so dark, it almost looks brown.

How does it taste? It's not quite like biting into a puff of cotton candy. The flavor is subtler than I would have imagined (I guess you could say it's light and ephemeral, like cotton candy itself); after the first bite, you mostly just taste the oats. Granted, I like Lucky Charms even plain, and the whole vibe of this cereal makes me happy. But since I'm not blown away by the cotton candy flavor, I'm only going to rate it two bowls and not three.

Squishmallows Spring Vibes

Review: Aside from the hot pink box, I'm struggling to determine what makes this "Spring Vibes" version any different from last year's Squishmallows cereal, so this review might sound repetitive. It does give off spring vibes (although it did that last year, too) - with its pale, yellow loops and pretty pink, blue, and purple marshmallows. Although the sheer variety of Squishmallows depicted on the box is sorely represented by these marshmallows. But that's to be expected - cereal marbits are far from the best medium for artistic expression. Their aesthetic value (setting aside the pivotal role they have in enhancing the flavor profile of a cereal) rarely extends beyond providing a pleasing pop of color. This is a perfectly pleasant marshmallow-flavored cereal, but I'm wondering if the market is saturated between this and Peeps cereal (also manufactured by Kellogg's)...

Strawberry Lucky Charms

Review: I had just missed Fruity Lucky Charms around the time that I started this blog, but this tie-in with the new Super Mario Galaxy movie reminds me of that cereal. I like how putting Mario on the front of the box opposite Lucky emphasizes how much Lucky's green outfit makes him look like Luigi.

The oat pieces are coated in a pretty pink layer of strawberry flavoring - which would have made them the perfect base for my Pixie Charms fantasy cereal. However, the "galactic marshmallows" just look like swirled blue, red, and green lemons. Apparently, General Mills didn't learn with their Galactic Lucky Charms that as cool a concept as space is, you really can't effectively represent something as nebulous as a "galaxy" in the form of a dehydrated marshmallow bit.

The small yellow stars, on the other hand, look great. (As cool as the unicorns and rainbows are, it's a testament to the importance of simplicity when it comes to marshmallow design). There are stars of all different colors drawn on the side of the box - I think the cereal would have looked better if they had ditched all the other marshmallows and just focused on the stars. Anyway, it's a lot better than the last Super Mario cereal I tried - you can't go wrong with Lucky Charms - and even better still with fresh strawberries cut up into it!

The Grinch

Review: For some reason, The Grinch is super popular this year. I don't know what it is, but I'll take any excuse to try a new cereal. Though it's vanilla, so I don't know how well I'll like it. But at least it has marshmallows! They're cute, too - little pink hearts. It all comes in a pretty green box that is very Christmas-y. Incidentally, I was just listening to a new Christmas song by rock band The Pretty Reckless, featuring Taylor Momsen who played Cindy Lou Who in the Grinch movie (25 years ago!).

I like the green puffs - they're very Grinchy. But the flavor is kind of off-putting. I taste more corn than vanilla. Looking at the nutrition facts, the sugar content is expectedly on the low side. Usually, General Mills nails their tie-ins; this tastes more like a Kellogg's promotional cereal. Did somebody turn the breakfast table upside-down? Or has the Grinch stolen all the flavor? I mean, it wouldn't be uncharacteristic of him. But of cereals based on characters likely to prank the public, I much prefer Wednesday's cereal from last year.

Demogorgon Crunch

Review: With the arrival of the final season of Stranger Things imminent, I'd been thinking how surprising it is that I've never seen a Stranger Things cereal before. Lo and behold, in the eleventh hour, out of my imagination and onto store shelves comes... Demogorgon Crunch! (I would have called it Stranger Rings). Notwithstanding my excitement, I'm a little hesitant because it's maple-flavored - on account of Eleven's obsession with Eggo waffles, I presume. Not that I don't like waffles, but maple isn't one of my favorite flavors. (Even when it comes to waffles, peanut butter is my preferred add-on - thanks, Waffle House). But, it's got marshmallows!

So, the cereal pieces actually look like waffles, and are very reminiscent of Kellogg's former Eggo Homestyle cereal (even more so than that other maple-with-marshmallows cereal, Elf). They're big, and have a good crunch. The "upside down" marshmallows (as if a marshmallow could have any sense of direction tumbling out of a cereal box) are two-toned, and resemble flashlights, demogorgon faces, and d20 dice. The box has a retro, Saturday morning cartoon vibe to it - which is appropriate for an '80s nostalgia show - with an eclectic tableau printed on the back of the box, tied to a lost-and-found game that'll test your knowledge of Stranger Things trivia. I think that, without the marshmallows, I would get bored of the waffles pretty quick, but all together, I found myself barrelling toward the finish, and still anticipating the next bowl.

Review: When I spotted this cereal in the store - a box of Oreo Puffs with a vivid orange banner across the top - I actually thought it was Oreo Reese's Puffs, an experiment I had just tried on my own! Although I don't know how that would work, because Reese's Puffs is manufactured by General Mills, and Oreo Puffs is handled by Post - but the fact that both products are owned by different companies didn't stop them from combining them for a special promotion recently.

Anyway, it hasn't even been a year since Post debuted the new puffs format of their Oreo O's cereal, and it's already got a Halloween edition! It's a welcome companion to Halloween Fruity Pebbles in Post's autumn holiday lineup. I like it perfectly well, but since cookies and cream isn't my favorite flavor, I can't promise that I'll be buying it every year. And I do appreciate Halloween cereals that are a little more creative than just turning the milk "spooky" orange. Even Halloween Crunch has ghost berries...

[Experiment] Oreo Reese's Puffs

Description: I was bored with that abysmally plain confetti cake cereal, so I decided to perform a mad science experiment. As hedonistic as it might sound to combine Reese's Puffs with Oreo Puffs (I know, we're living in a society XD), I was inspired by the recent combination of just those two brands for a rare collaboration between Reese's and Oreos.

What's your pleasure, sir?

So, how do they taste together? The flavors don't really coalesce. Some bites favor chocolate and peanut butter, others cookies and creme. That said, they're both good flavors, so you can't really go wrong joining them together. Keeping my own preference in mind for peanut butter over "creme", I think the Reese's Puffs improve the Oreo Puffs, but I'd rather have my Reese's Puffs unadulterated. Which tracks with my opinion on the recent candy chimeras - an Oreo tastes better with peanut butter filling than a Reese's cup does with cookies and creme. Still, it was a lot of fun to try.

[Experiment] Marshmallow Krispies

Description: Since Rice Krispies Treats are the only thing Rice Krispies has going for it, I'm surprised I've never seen a box of Rice Krispies with marshmallows (there is evidence that Rice Krispies Treats cereal existed at one time, but I missed it). So I decided to make my own! I pilfered some of the marshmallows from Oreo Puffs, and added them to a bowl of Rice Krispies. It's obviously an improvement, but even marshmallows can't mask the plainness of the Rice Krispies.

I thought it would be better with Frosted Krispies as the base, so I tried that, too. It was sweet enough, but I'm not sure it's wise to add marshmallows to a cereal that already has 15g of sugar per cup (by comparison, Lucky Charms has only 12). It doesn't taste quite like Rice Krispies Treats, but then, the Rice Krispies aren't actually coated with marshmallow. I don't like this cereal enough to warrant duplicating this experiment, but I think there's potential here for Kellogg's to tweak the formula. I'd try it if they gave it a shot.

Rainbow Sprinkles Lucky Charms

Review: With every cereal I review, I become a more seasoned critic. But it can also feel like I'm repeating myself sometimes. This is a birthday cake flavored version of Lucky Charms - and my opinion on birthday cake is well-documented. It's colorful, but it's not one of my favorite flavors. And this version of Lucky Charms isn't even that pretty (although I like the fading gradient on the front of the box). The "confetti sprinkle pieces" are not just underwhelming - they're downright disappointing! You can barely see them. With a corn rather than oat base (much like Honey Clovers), the cereal pieces resemble yellow cake. Apparently, the debut of JUMBO Rainbows drained the charm's teleportation power, because you can follow a maze on the back of this box to help Lucky recharge his rainbow charm. You won't be surprised to learn that this isn't the best version of Lucky Charms I've tried. It's prefectly edible, but I wouldn't buy it again.

Lucky Charms JUMBO Rainbows

Review: While it's as good an excuse as any to have a [Giant Size] box of Lucky Charms, I doubted whether having jumbo rainbow marshmallows was enough of a reason to give this cereal its own review. My opinion on Lucky Charms (which is one of my lifelong favorites) is well-documented, so the only thing in question is what effect, if any, these jumbo marshmallows have on my experience of eating it.

"Wherever you dream to go, it's possible with Lucky's jumbo rainbow!" Since the regular rainbow charm already gives Lucky the power to teleport, I'm interpreting the jumbo charm to give Lucky the power to teleport to places he's never been before (to boldly go...). Unless the idea is that he can teleport to fantastical places located in the realm of pure imagination? General Mills, please clarify.

Anyway, it's a pretty superficial modification - every once in a while, you'll get a bite with a larger marshmallow. It's not the best, but also not the worst novelty marshmallow I've seen in Lucky Charms. The size difference does disrupt the cereal's uniformity somewhat, so I don't expect it'll stick around (do they ever?). But it is nice to dig into the cereal and get a stronger impression of "rainbows!" than usual.

For better or worse (your mileage may vary), General Mills has managed to emphasize rainbows with this cereal, without tying it to gay pride. I support gay pride (and silence on this issue can speak volumes in this day and age); but I also recognize that, as a meteorological phenomenon, rainbows aren't intrinsically gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But I believe they deserve to maintain a life outside of gay pride, too.

Oreo Puffs

Review: I feel a bit foolish buying this cereal, when it's really just Mega Stuf Oreo O's, but in the form of puffs instead of loops. But I guess that's the job I signed up for with this blog. Surprisingly, it has considerably less sugar (almost 5g per cup, if my math is right) than Mega Stuff Oreo O's; proving Kellogg's error - that a sphere has less surface area (e.g., for sugary frosting) than a torus (i.e., loop or donut shape). In fact, it has less sugar even than plain Oreo O's without marshmallows! (And given that Oreos are a cream-filled sandwich cookie, I think this cereal deserves to have marshmallows).

That's good, from a health standpoint - it makes the cereal less egregiously unhealthy. You know I can't abide a cereal that doesn't even try to be sweet, but on the other hand, I think it's stupid to go to the other extreme, and max out levels of unhealthiness just... for what? To be edgy? But does the reduction in sweetness ruin this cereal? Honestly, I think it's as good as any Oreo cereal I've had so far. The chocolate cookie flavor reminds me, faintly, of Wednesday cereal - which I get the feeling wasn't very popular, but I actually liked. I daresay this ought to be considered the definitive Oreo cereal from here on out. And it avoids that awkward apostrophe that Oreo O's has!

Review: Like a hug in a cereal bowl, Squishmallows has joined the breakfast table! This isn't the first marshmallow-flavored cereal with marshmallows that Kellogg's has slapped its name on, so comparisons to Peeps cereal are entirely appropriate. The colors are a little more subdued - pale yellow loops accented by pastel pink, blue, and purple marshmallows shaped like Cam the calico cat - but not at all unpleasant. It's like Peeps had an illicit tryst with LOL Surprise! (a General Mills cereal), and this is the offspring. Anyway, this cereal is low in fat, has an expectedly moderate but not unreasonable amount of sugar, and may be a little plain, but is sweet, with a good marshmallow flavor. I suspect that it's basically Peeps re-branded so it can be sold year-round.

Review: Just when I thought I was done with the holiday line of Fruity Pebbles cereals, Post has figured out the trick to get me to buy their WinterFest Fruity Pebbles again - they added marshmallows! It's basically Marshmallow Fruity Pebbles, just limited to the Christmas colors of red and green. Which is to say, not as pretty. In fact, the green is very dull - somewhat Grinch-like. I like that the marshmallows are simple, white, and round - they could be snowballs, and remind me of the marshmallows in Hot Cocoa Puffs. I'll begrudgingly give this cereal a two bowl rating, but I'm still waiting for Cocoa Pebbles to get the holiday treatment. Hot Cocoa Pebbles, anyone?

Review: As novelty variations of classic cereals go, there are a lot of versions of Lucky Charms that simply feature the superficial addition of a new marshmallow (few of which ever stick around) - so I've basically already reviewed this cereal many times over. To reiterate, it's fairly plain, but it's the best marshmallow-based cereal on the market, as the plain oat pieces allow the marshmallows to shine, instead just being an add-on. (It's like the difference between the cherry on top of a sundae, and a cherry pie). I was recently looking through my baby book, and I noted that my favorite food was listed as Lucky Charms. So it makes sense that this is one of my favorite cereals. After all, I've been eating it for a long time.

Kelce Mix

Review: I have no idea who "Kelce" is, or why he's important enough to have a cereal named after him. Frankly, I don't care. The less said about those two ugly mugs staring back at me from the front of the box, the better. Now, the cereal - this is a truly intriguing mix of three cereals I like, with very different flavors: cinnamon, marshmallow, and peanut butter & chocolate. The instant I saw it in the store, I wanted to see how it all tastes together. Notwithstanding my recent Monster Combos, I haven't had a good cereal mix since Cinnamon Toast Crunch Lucky Charms MIX! So let's dig in.

Right out of the box, this cereal presents a visual cohesion that belies the varied nature of its components. It's all shades of tan and light brown, with the marshmallows providing a nice pop of color. It's a surreal phenomenon, but I can identify the flavors of each of the individual cereals if I focus on them. Together, the taste is not unpleasant - though I feel like it could use more marshmallows. It's not as good as any of the cereals individually (I don't think it would satisfy a craving for any particular one), but the sheer audacity of combining them all together makes you feel like a bit of a maverick for eating it. I'm not going to say I love it, but I definitely like it. This has certainly been one of the more memorable cereal experiments I've tried this year.

Monster Combos

Three years ago, the appearance of Monster Mash cereal inspired me to combine my own mix of the Monster Cereals together for a frightful concoction. The result was disappointing; there was just too much going on in the bowl. So I'd been thinking of trying out different combinations of these cereals, two at a time. And with last year's introduction of Carmella Creeper to the lineup - a caramel apple cereal - the possibilities show even more promise. Step into my kitchen laboratory, and we'll try some experiments!

Chocolate/Caramel Apple

I thought this sounded like a good combination - chocolate and caramel go well together, and it's in a similar vein to the classic fall treat, the candy apple. And it does taste good. Honestly, I think the chocolate draws out the caramel flavor better. I'm surprised General Mills hasn't done something like this yet, although Carmella Creeper is still pretty new. Maybe it'll be next year's version of Monster Mash. I'd like that.

Strawberry/Blueberry

Mixing the two berry cereals together seemed like a no-brainer, although their similarity means the combination lacks distinction. And though, as expected, the flavors complement each other well, it's not as fruity as I would have thought. It tastes mostly of corn. Even the milk is surprisingly plain. Once again, it's the marshmallows alone that carry this cereal.

Caramel Apple/Strawberry

Visually, the green balances out that vibrant pink, and the marshmallows kind of fade into the background. When I eat Carmella Creeper alone, the flavors don't really stand out, but pairing it with something else seems to make the caramel pop. This is like plain Carmella Creeper, but with a slightly fruitier balance. I'd say it's an improvement over either cereal alone.

Caramel Apple/Blueberry

As far as I can tell, this is the combination they use for Monster Mash Remix - although they probably use a different mix of marshmallows, and who can be sure what flavors they might add without telegraphing it with the proper dyes? On that note, the colors complement each other well - bright green contrasted with dark purple. And the flavors do, too - better than you might think, pouring caramel over blueberries. This is pretty similar to caramel apple/strawberry, but I think Boo Berry has a slightly better flavor than Franken Berry, so this is a little bit better. It's not a bad choice for a Monster Mash; although I would still prefer chocolate/caramel apple.

Strawberry/Chocolate

Chocolate-covered strawberries, anyone? The brown and pink make a nice contrast. I feel like the fruity flavor is more front-and-center, but there's a nice chocolate undercurrent. It's not a bad combination - it certainly makes Franken Berry more palatable. I don't think I like it as much as chocolate/caramel apple, though. Every once in awhile, I get a bite that seems to clash, but I'm not sure why.

Blueberry/Chocolate

Although conceptually very similar to strawberry/chocolate, I think blueberries and chocolate is a somewhat less common combination. But still good. The purple Boo Berry pieces are so dark, you can hardly distinguish them from the brown Count Chocula pieces. It's a shame it doesn't make as good a visual impression (looks do matter), because I think it tastes better than the mix with Franken Berry. Which was to be expected.

Caramel Apple/Berry

I did this with Count Chocula way back when, so I thought it would only be fair to give Carmella Creeper a chance. And it's not bad. I used two parts caramel apple (1 cup) to each part strawberry and blueberry (half cup each) for a proper balance of flavors. It's really not that much different from using Franken Berry or Boo Berry alone. And the mix of colors looks much more lively. I have no idea why they don't use this as their Monster Mash; I think it's just as good.

Berry/Chocolate

Although I did this once before, with all the other combinations I was mixing together, I figured I could stand to give it a second chance. And this time, like with my caramel apple/berry concoction, I mixed the chocolate 2:1 with the strawberry and blueberry, so it's equal parts chocolate and fruity. The blending of the Count Chocula and Boo Berry pieces does dull the visual impression a little - on the other hand, it has more of a gradient look. I taste the chocolate more than the fruitiness. That said, the fruitiness kind of clashes with the chocolate for some reason. I honestly can't say why this combination doesn't work better, but the success of Monster Mash clearly relies on the presence of newcomer Carmella Creeper.

Monster Medley

I'm calling this "Monster Medley" because Monster Mash was already taken. You know I had to do it. But yeah, there's a lot going on in this cereal. The flavors aren't bad, but it doesn't really coalesce into a single flavor experience. Even if you take the time to mix it up evenly, you're bound to get a different concentration of pieces in every spoonful. It looks interesting, though - with all those colors. And now, I'm kinda sick of the Monster Cereals. I don't think I wanna eat them again for a whole year... :-p

Boo Berry

Review: I know a lot of people who love Boo Berry, so I might break a few hearts with this review. Honestly, it's not a bad cereal. It's more purple than blue, but I like the low-key trans-friendly marshmallow colors. If I have to eat a bowl or two, it's perfectly fine. I just get bored with it quickly. Other than being blueberry instead of strawberry (a less common flavor for cereals), it's really no different than Franken Berry. And I'd rather eat Frute Brute. I don't know why Fruity Yummy Mummy is such a dark horse, because this lineup could really benefit from a citrus counterpoint to all these berry cereals.

Review: This is actually my least favorite of the Monster Cereals, even though it's basically the flagship variety (or was that Count Chocula?). It's a bright, shocking pink, and it smells good, but after so many bites, it kinda starts tasting plain. If not for the marshmallows, it'd be incredibly dull. Don't get me wrong, it's edible, but there's not much here to inspire a craving. You've heard me say this before, but I think they should use Frute Brute's new formula, and re-name it Franken Cherry. Strawberry's a good flavor, but it's overdone.

Notice: The year I started this blog, General Mills came out with Monster Mash. The following year, they brought back Frute Brute. And last year they introduced Carmella Creeper. I originally didn't review Count Chocula, Franken Berry, and Boo Berry because I considered them the regular cereals, and the others the limited edition novelties. But I've been waiting for a "fallow year" with a lighter load on Halloween so I could properly review the classics. And now that time has come!

Review: Count Chocula is easily my favorite Monster Cereal. I mean, come on. It's chocolate, and it has marshmallows. A combination like that can't fail. There's really nothing more to say about it. I could take or leave the fruity Monsters (although I was pleasantly surprised by Frute Brute), and Carmella Creeper was an enjoyable novelty, but Count Chocula is the only cereal in the lineup I've made a habit of buying, and the only one I've over-enthusiastically indulged before, by buying what was probably too many boxes for one person to eat in a single spooky season...
